Ready for the World

Melvin Riley's legacy was secured in the mid 1980's as the lead singer of "Ready for the World". His first track "Oh Sheila" launched him and his band to the top of the charts. At the street level everyone swore that "Oh Sheila" was Prince singing about Sheila E. but within a short time people discovered it was Melvin Riley and Ready for the World. Their performances and look were phenonemal. Within a year they followed up "Oh Sheila" with the hit "Love You Down". This song was so good that it became a hit a second time when it was remade by Inoj in the late 1990's. Other hits include Digital Display, My Girly and many more. Although the groups name was Ready for the World the style and sound was all Melvin. In 1994 Melvin launched his career as a solo artist with "So Ghetto". Unfortunately, his new look alienated his core fans and the album was never marketed properly by his label. In addition, the title "So Ghetto" was far and away from the extravagent, sexy style that first brought Melvin all his success. Although the look changed the sound remained and Melvin displayed his never ending talent on this album. "Whose Is It" and "Spoil You" maintain that unique Melvin Riley / Ready for the World sound which inspired groups like Mint Condition and Troop. If you love "Ready for the World" or that early Prince, The Time or Vanity 6 sound than this album is a must have for your collection.

Whose is it?

I will tell you whose it is, none other than Melvin Riley's cd! This had to be one of the best cd's to come out during the 90's. I am just upset that radio stations didn't get it the airtime that it deserved. I mean yes he was good with RFTW BUT, he was much better as a stand alone artist. I hope to hear more from the brother in the future. This cd had that ghetto grind that made you feel that you were the man! On the same note though the slow jams put you in that mood when you were with the special someone. Happy listening! Oh yeah, there has to be more than two people that have wanted to write a review for this cd! So listen and tell me what you think!
