iTunes Editors’ Notes
The haunting soundtrack to author Stephen King’s supernatural musical Ghost Brothers of Darkland County collects songs written by famed heartland rocker John Mellencamp, featuring rural melodies with twangy guitars and fiddles. The performers include a who’s who of luminaries such as Elvis Costello, Kris Kristofferson, and Sheryl Crow, and the whole package was produced by award-winning roots-rock mastermind T-Bone Burnett (whose curatory talent includes the soundtrack to O Brother, Where Art Thou? and The Big Lebowski). The soundtrack also incorporates spoken dialogue from the production, evoking the spooky atmosphere of an old-time radio drama.
Truly Unique Musical
A musical by novelist Stephen King with original music written by John Mellencamp is in itself a very original idea. But add such artists as Kris Kristofferson, Phil & Dave Alvin, Sheryl Crow, and Taj Mahal and you have a stew that is so delicious that it must be shared. Absolutely wonderful. It has soul, it has talent and originality. Absolutely great.
This album is long over due and I do feel it is a good one with the artists chosen. However after seeing the play twice in Atlanta, I wish the original cast members would have been given the opportunity to sing the songs instead. Dale Watson and Jake La Botz, Justin Guarini, the gentleman whose name escapes me at the moment who played Joe McCanless and all of the female actors nailed those songs and brought the house down both times I saw the show. They could have easily carried this album to greatness! Not to say that the current artists wouldn't.... But it isn't the same. Why change something that sounded so perfect in the beginning? So to me it is kind of sad that you had to take this fabulous play written and brought to life by amazing people and then sell out to other artists. I know that movies do this all the time and maybe the theatre does too, but they were the ones who made the play.... Not Ms. Crow or Mr. Costello. So three stars that you finally produced it and got it out there, but sad to see that none of the original artists are present.
Theo and Weird Henry
John wrote a song entitled Theo and Weird Henry from his Big Daddy album. Very similar premise. This project has been going on for years. Music is good, story seems like it's lacking.
