iTunes Editors’ Notes

Stepping back from the blazing energy of 2008’s Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends and 2011’s Mylo Xyloto, Coldplay’s sixth album is an introspective, bittersweet meditation on love and loss that sounds every bit as spectral as its name suggests. The band’s gift for soaring melodies is evident throughout Ghost Stories—particularly on the magnetic first single, “Magic.” But aside from the EDM-infused throb of “A Sky Full of Stars,” the album offers little of the triumphant grandeur that defines the band’s stadium-filling oeuvre. Instead, Chris Martin’s heart-rending falsetto floats along in a haze of synth-washed ambience (as on the entrancing Kid A–influenced “Midnight”) or sparely accompanied by acoustic instruments (“Oceans,” “O”). When the final track fades out, offering a wordless, melancholy hymn from a distant choir, Ghost Stories demonstrates the expressive power of understatement.

Excited

To those of you who are hating on their newest music saying, "they've changed so much" and "the new "pop" coldplay is awful".... Do you expect them to keep coming out with the same exact sound of music album after album? If you want to hear more of the same stuff, put those albums on repeat for the rest of your life. I'm not saying i love all of their new songs, but I'm not saying I loved all of their old ones either. Coldplay was and always will be a great band- just because you do not like they're new music doesn't mean it's any less as good as their originals--it's just new. Sounds pretty good to me. Excited for this album.

COLDPLAY FOR DAYZ.

Listened to "Midnight" and I was immediately hooked to this new side of Coldplay, triggering that same addiction I had to Imogen Heap's "Hide and Seek" years ago with the same vocoder-style that she used. It didn't stop at "Midnight", though. Their electric and simplistic personality in "Midnight" carried over into "Magic" with a simple beat, awesome vocals and great backgrounds! Super excited for the rest of the album!!

New sound

It's great to see them continue to explore sonic landscapes. It's very immersive from an instrumental standpoint.

Biography

Formed: 1998 in London, England

Genre: Alternative

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

After surfacing in 2000 with the breakthrough single "Yellow," Coldplay quickly became one of the biggest bands of the new millennium, honing a mix of introspective Brit-pop and anthemic rock that landed the British quartet a near-permanent residence on record charts worldwide. The group's emergence was perfectly timed; Radiohead had just released the overly cerebral Kid A, while Oasis had ditched two founding members and embraced psychedelic experimentation on Standing on the Shoulder of Giants....
