About Sky Chefs

Sky Chefs is a clever and idiosyncratic indie pop project led by songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Dale Nicholls. As a child, Nicholls learned to play guitar from his mother, while his father worked with Desi Arnaz's band. A wandering minstrel of smart pop, Nicholls was previously the leader of the critically acclaimed group Spy Island. He has lived and worked in Detroit, Michigan; Portland, Oregon; Paris, France: Dublin, Ireland, and parts of New Zealand before settling in Los Angeles and launching his new group. Featuring a rotating lineup of musicians -- including drummer Tabor Allen of Cherry Glazerr and Peter Young of Loretta Lynn's road band -- Sky Chefs began as a home-recording project. As the scope of the arrangements grew, Nicholls took his portable recording setup to several makeshift locales, as well as proper recording studios in California. Chris Schlarb mixed the material, and the self-titled debut album from Sky Chefs was released in March 2016. By the time the album was released, Nicholls had already begin writing a second Sky Chefs album which, with Schlarb in the producer's chair this time, was recorded live in just two days. Released in April 2017, Ghosts & Goblins featured stripped-down arrangements and a looser feel than Nicholls' debut. ~ Mark Deming
