one of his best

I'm a saxophone player myself and I have to say this is one of Kenny's best albums. I mean, why couldn't it be. He had to come with everything he had to make sure his tribute to JOHN COLTRANE was on point. It was a very brave decision to do an album of Coltrane tunes as a saxophone player. One thing I like about this album in particular is it's the only album he has with guitar. Also, what's important is that Kenny's tone on this album was the best out of all the albums in my opinion. The song selection is great here too... well balanced. Pat's playing is outstanding on this album and we all know Brian Blade is great. Rodney is holding the bass down too. It's great to hear Kenny's interpretation of these great tunes. Still sounds good over 10 years later. Great album 5 out of 5.

Essential listening

This album is not only one of Kenny Garrett's best (although, don't miss Songbook or Standard of Language either), but it's also a classic recording of Pat Metheny (g), Brian Blade (d), and Rodney Whitaker (b). The Metheny / Garrett intro to "After the Rain" is sublime. Fantastic.

He has released a number of critically acclaimed albums and, prior to the birth of his recording career, paid his dues in the jazz clubs in and around his native Detroit. Garrett's...
