Liverpool tunesmith Dan Croll knows how to serve up sonic appetizers for hungry ears. His From Nowhere EP is a great example of the inventiveness he and his team can exercise with just one song, making it sound like four different songs. (He honed his skills at the Liverpool Institute for Performing Arts, co-founded by Sir Paul McCartney, and subsequently won songwriting awards.) Croll’s From Nowhere opens confidently with the title track, which plays like Bon Iver backed by a bombastic indie chamber-pop band; it's dynamically layered with polyrhythmic textures and anthemic vocal harmonies. Croll has cleverly and deliberately put the horse before the cart (or the hit before the album) in the hopes that listeners will eagerly await more. And in the tune's Casiokids Remix, we're teased with further hints of Croll's brilliance. Here he swaps his Scouser leanings for a reworking that has more in common with early-'90s Manchester, save for the squealing synth solo. Baardsen helps turn the tune into an ambient lullaby before Lanborg drives the song toward '80s Chicago house.
