Album Review

Searching for a lo-fi Violent Femmes? Look no further than Sleeping in the Aviary, and their 2008 release, the charmingly titled Expensive Vomit in a Cheap Hotel. Hailing from Madison, WI, Sleeping in the Aviary certainly possesses the same snotty charm as the aforementioned Femmes (circa their early era), especially in the vocal stylings of singer/guitarist Elliott Kozel, which can be heard clearly on the album opening "Write On." Elsewhere, you'll also find a Pixies-esque ditty ("Gas Mask Blues") and a haunting album closing ditty ("Windshield"). The trio keeps it bare-bones sounding throughout, as Expensive Vomit in a Cheap Hotel sounds like it could have been recorded in your living room, with just a few mikes strewn around. And that is exactly the charm of Sleeping in the Aviary.

good stuff

Check em out, they make unique, poppy, yet complex tunes.

Pleh...

I was dead excited when i saw that Sleeping in the Aviary had a new album out (Their previous, Oh, This Old Thing? is one of my all time favorites) but soon after I put my headphones on I found myself checking to make sure I bought the right record. Expensive Vomit in a Cheap Hotel fails to capture the same spazzy, desperate, static electricity that the band's first album sent exploding through my speakers for months ("Write On" comes close) It's possible the boys are just maturing musically. If they are I respect them for it, however I don't have to like it.

Amazing Album

This is one of the best albums I have ever listened to. It is always playing in my car and never gets old. Every song has something different but the album still flows together. I would recommend this head and shoulders over their other album.

Biography

Formed: 2003 in Madison, WI

Genre: Pop

Years Active: '00s

Self-consciously quirky indie rock trio Sleeping in the Aviary played its first gigs in their hometown of Madison, WI, in the spring of 2004. A high-energy group with new wave leanings strongly reminiscent of early XTC and Talking Heads before they discovered Brian Eno and the Nonesuch Explorer series, Sleeping in the Aviary also features a line in occasionally precious, studiedly "wacky" lyrics in keeping with the nonsensical band name. Based around the core duo of singer and guitarist Elliott Kozel...
