iTunes Editors’ Notes

Matthew Sweet’s third album made power pop radio-friendly again (see the majestic “I’ve Been Waiting”) while it treated fans of pure pop music to songs that merged wide-ranging influences: there’s R&B (the title track), sad-bastard country (“Winona”), straight-up anti-war rock (“Holy War”), and Neil Young–ish singer/songwriter balladizing (“You Don’t Love Me” and the drop-dead-lovely finale “Nothing Lasts”). The guitar interplay between Robert Quine (Richard Hell & The Voidoids) and Richard Lloyd (Television) stings, stabs, and soars and provides a highly listenable (and wholly unpredictable) counterpoint to occasional pedal steel guitars and Sweet’s tender tenor.

Customer Reviews

Exceptional power pop with a brain

Sharp, punchy, and sometimes melodic, this album has guitar-based songs with great hooks and wide-ranging lyrics. If you were too young or were distracted by other music at the time (Nirvana 'Nevermind' era), you need to give this a listen. These songs have stuck with me over the years and I think they have a timeless appeal. The CD also had a homage to vinyl interlude between "side 1" and "side 2"; I hope the iTunes tracks do too.

Derelict Hero

The hidden album of the 90's, Sweet's under-rock frequency experimented with genres whose lonesome cords turn like the pages of a book.

Wow, only two reviews!

This record is a classic. Great catchy pop songs about love and heartbreak. Even a little country thrown in for good measure. Just buy it for Holy War and all of it rock goodness.

Born: October 6, 1964 in Lincoln, NE

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s, '10s

After spending the '80s as an unappreciated jangle pop guitarist with Oh-OK and Lloyd Cole, as well as a solo artist, Matthew Sweet emerged in 1991 as the leading figure of the American power pop revival. Like his British counterparts Teenage Fanclub, Sweet adhered to traditional songcraft, yet subverted the form by adding noisy post-punk guitar and flourishes of country-rock, resulting in an amalgam of the Beatles, Big Star, R.E.M., and Neil Young. Recorded with guitarists Richard Lloyd and Robert...
