Album Review

A leading light in the somewhat curious world of Hawaiian reggae, Butch Helemano is a smooth singer and a talented songwriter who sometimes errs just a bit too far on the side of slick production and whose lyrics sometimes come across as just a bit prefabricated, but even at his most banal, Helemano knows how to put his sunny grooves and effortlessly catchy melodies across. On Reggae Soul he spends most of his time in a sort of digital-roots mode, flirting with hip hop beats and sound effects on "You're the Only One" but keeping things dour and dread on the minor-key anthem "Roots and Culture." There's plenty of his signature lovers rock as well, as exemplified by the soulful "Love Me Now" and the nicely funky "Come Along." Less effective is the galloping ska of "It's Alright," which comes across as a weak tribute to the glory days of Studio One. He's not changing the face of reggae music, but you can always count on Butch Helemano to provide some pleasant listening for a summer night on the beach.
