iTunes Review

As the Clark Brothers this sibling trio won top honors on Fox’s The Next Great American Band in 2007. With a name change and a Carrie Underwood tour behind them, they fill their debut long-player with bravura energy and hook-studded songwriting. Though the Sons of Sylvia have ties to Nashville, Adam Clark’s mandolin and his brother Austin’s dobro work are the main country touches found here. Revelation is an exercise in modern rock, with overtones of everything from U2 (“Give Me Love”) to Aerosmith (“50 Ways”) evident. Lead singer Ashley Clark radiates charisma throughout, mixing romantic urgency with heroic élan. “John Wayne” and “Love Left to Lose” are widescreen melodramas set to bracing rhythms, allowing Ashley to unleash his formidable vocal range. “Long Beach” and “Song of Solomon” smolder thoughtfully, while “The War Within” combines sound clips with a steamy groove. Most compelling is the title track, an exploration of identity invoking the ghosts of John Lennon and Elvis.

Great debut! Looking forward to seeing them on the road with Carrie Underwood this year! Love left to lose is a sure hit!

After the long wait...... THIS???

How many years has it been since The Clark Brothers won the America's Greatest Band TV show? I've been periodically scouring the Internet from time to time, looking for a mention of the band or an announcement of a forthcoming album, with no results. I gave up on them about this time last year.

And then Lo and behold, here there are -- under a different name, with a prefab corporate country/rock/pop sound, doing all the things the judges on that long-ago TV show BEGGED them not to do. Now they've got a rhythm section, and electric guitars, and the leather jackets and gelled hair and etc., etc., etc...

The sound they had under their original incarnation was uniquely American, uniquely Southern, uniquely Gothic, and uniquely theirs. Even so, they apparently had enough commercial appeal to win a network TV talent contest, with thousands and thousands of brand-new fans looking forward to taking a ride with their soon-to-be brilliant career. The sound they have now could've come out of any number of studios in Nashville or Orlando or LA, fashioned by journeyman producers and management with their eyes on the $$ prize.

The only comparison I can make is if Bruce Springsteen, early on in his career, decided to become Huey Lewis. Yes, I think the Clark Brothers WERE that good; I think the Sons of Sylvia ARE that mediocre. I'm saddened and angry and horribly disappointed by this MOR piece of processed American cheese.

Already ready for their next album!

Every one of these songs is outstanding! The Sons of Sylvia play and sing with everything in them! This album is a fusion between soul, pop, rock, country, and bluegrass. It's fresh and alive with a new sound - you've never heard anything quite like this before!!!

A country-pop trio featuring three photogenic brothers, Sons of Sylvia was formed in 2007 by Adam Clark (guitar, mandolin), Ashley Clark (lead vocals, fiddle, guitar, mandolin), and Austin Clark (background vocals, resonator guitar). Along with three other siblings -- Aaron, Andrew, and Alan Clark -- the members were originally part of the Clark Family Experience, a sextet that recorded an album for Curb Records in 2002 before disbanding and filing for bankruptcy one year later. Adam, Ashley, and...
