iTunes Review

Brandi Carlile’s a young singer-songwriter with incredible range and a sense for drama that comes whipping through her third album, Give Up the Ghost. Produced by Rick Rubin, Ghost sits Carlile at centerstage. Guests such as keyboardist Benmont Tench, Red Hot Chili Pepper drummer Chad Smith (on two tracks) and master string arranger Paul Buckmaster (on one) are in low profile mode. Even “Pride and Joy,” the Buckmaster-featured tune that shares its sense of foreboding (and a few chords) with Radiohead’s “Fake Plastic Trees,” is kept surprisingly mute as it reaches its climax. “Dreams” creates a small-band vibe that veers towards hard rock. “That Year” is a gentle ballad that allows her voice to stretch towards the sky. “Caroline” adds Elton John on piano and vocals and falls within his early-70s form. “I Will” serves as a personal affirmation with its repetitive, elliptical pattern. “If There Was No You” is a sweet, affirming love song with co-writer Phil Hanseroth providing a whistling solo.

Give Up the Ghost

Her BEST YET!!!!! Worth every penny... See her LIVE if you get the chance. Probably the BEST concert I've ever seen!

brilliance at it's best

From rocking tempos to emotional pieces like "That Year", BCB covers a wide range of musical styles with an honest effort always uniquely their own. In a world of over-produced music that all sounds the same, Giving Up the Ghost is timeless.

Brilliant!

Let me start by saying that I am a biased review. I live in Seattle, and have seen Brandi, the awesome Hanseroth brothers and Josh Neumann, a number of times.
That being said, I have been listening to the "Give Up The Ghost" material for more than a year now.
You are either going to be in love with Brandi's music, or hate it. I LOVE IT!
Some of my favorite tracks from this disc are "Dying Days", "Dreams" and the absolutely heart wrenching, "Before It Breaks".
I am extremely pleased with the way the disc turned out, with two minor dsappointments. The first is "Caroline" which the legendary Elton John performs on. I found his performance bland and uninspired. In my opinion, he should have been edited out of this rousing, upbeat, song of Brandi's. The other song that was different than I expected was "Oh Dear". I have seen it performed several times live, and always enjoyed it , but don't particularly care for the mix of it on the disc, with what I feel are oddly layered vocals.
All in all, an excellent effort from the quartet, a must have for the collection, AND WELL WORTH THE WAIT!

A literate singer/songwriter whose music splits the difference between pop/rock and folksy Americana, Brandi Carlile was born in the small town of Ravensdale, Washington, an isolated community 50 miles from Seattle. With few neighbors or friends nearby, she grew up learning to make her own entertainment, which included hiking trips in the nearby woods and self-taught vocal lessons. Carlile also grew attached to the classic country music her parents doted on, specifically Patsy Cline, and she made...
