Editors’ Notes

This deluxe edition of the band's fourth album, the daring two-record set Odessa, makes a strong statement for the group's creative and innovative drive at this early peak in its career. It began as a concept album that fell apart amidst internal squabbling between Barry and Robin, but was issued as an elaborate felt-covered, gatefold collection that boldly announced its importance. The extended format allowed the group to indulge. Yet, the group's pop sense kept things under control. The title track explodes over seven minutes; however, the group delivered more modest and beautifully orchestrated pop songs for "Melody Fair," "First of May" and "Lamplight." This deluxe edition offers 22 unreleased tracks: primarily demos and alternate takes that students of the artistic process will find invaluable, as the alternate takes feature instrumental backing later erased from the finished product, as well as "With All Nations (International Anthem)" featuring vocals that were later removed for the official instrumental version. Fans of the Zombies' Odessey and Oracle, the folk stylings of Nick Drake, and ornate pop of the psychedelic era should be easily seduced by this often over-looked classic.

Customer Reviews

Never Say Never

We have been waiting for this one, for a long time..Back it the early 80's I ran into Barry, at their book signing, in London, and expressed to him, that I thought Odessa was as good as the Beatles White Album...he laughed and said " you liked Odessa?" So, I guess they never thought much of it, due to the above mentioned friction, this Album caused..Anyway, for me, I always thought this Odessa was a wonderful project, maybe they will too, one day. Great stuff, well done...Thanks for bringing Odessa back, and all the wonderful extras..!!!

Great album!!!

To the reviewer who stated that he/she feels cheated by the missing tracks know this, that the missing tracks and there are 17 of them are all monoaural tracks of the songs that are included as stereo tracks in this set. So by all means if you want to spend $8.00- $10.00 more for the redundancy of these mono tracks than feel free to do so.

Relying on their top-notch songwriting and impeccable vocals, the Bee Gees were able to craft a long-running career that began in the late '50s in Australia. Along the way they became a hit-producing psychedelic pop group in England during the '60s, the biggest disco band in the world in the '70s, and had a late comeback as adult contemporary crooners in the '90s. Their long-reaching influence extended past sales figures and saw their sound and style mirrored in acts as disparate as Justin Timberlake...
