Logan Venderlic

West Virginia singer/songwriter Logan Venderlic calls his music "folk wave," a combination of indie rock-pop and Appalachian folk. "A Walk with a Girl" turns up an infectious innocence reminiscent of Jonathan Richman; it's further pressed into service with the clever lyricism of "Soul of a Cynic." "Me, Me, Me" throws together a romantic acoustic ballad that aches with the existential angst of Paul Westerberg and features a piano solo that's pure naked beauty. "Blue Pills/Red Cups" kicks in with a Mellotron, a plaintive electric guitar, and a ticking rhythm track that appears to be counting down time. "Baccalaureate" uses an agitated rhythm to emulate the earnest youthfulness of Bright Eyes' Conor Oberst. These songs have an uncensored quality, a bareness in both instrumentation and delivery that makes it extremely easy to focus on Venderlic's crisp songwriting. The album closer, "Jerkwater Town," features the mix of emotions young people have about their hometowns as they feel themselves outgrowing their surroundings but are still deeply attached in their hearts.
