Album Review

After two albums of neo-traditional Irish music, Mike Scott brings The Waterboys back to the big rock sound of earlier albums like This is the Sea. Coming after the remarkably accomplished Fishermen's Blues and Room to Roam, Dream Harder is a bit of a disappointment. Its best material doesn't carry the same weight as compositions from Blues — compare the simple beauty of Fishermen's Blues' "Has Anyone Hear Seen Hank" to Dream Harder's overblown "The Return of Jimi Hendrix." Scott can still bang out some good songs, but on Dream Harder there aren't as many as on previous efforts.

Customer Reviews

This is Mike Scott alone, NOT the Waterboys!

Regardless of what Mike says, this is NOT the Waterboys. No Karl, no Anthony, no Steve, no fun! The Waterboys was always the synergistic blend of wonderful musical gifts. I found this album to be a lot less than that.

Don't Wake Me

Wrong, This is a great effort. The first three songs has pulled me out of some dark moods. The Waterboys rocking out on a positive note nothing wrong with that, solid all the way through.

I have listened to The Waterboys since there first music release. I have seen them twice. This album is much different from there past however The vibe they have always sent out remains. You could say that is because Mike Scott was The Waterboys or you could say that it is because The Waterboys although apart are not ever really. They remain friends and out of that friendship they vibe remains. What is in this album is almost like a completion of previous thought from the other albums. Almost as if a circle has meant it's other end. Beautiful music and a mastery at story telling this Album will never get the credit it deserves, The Waterboys never did but if you like the samples I promise you will only like it more over time.

Led by the literate singer/songwriter Mike Scott, the group's sole constant member, the mercurial Waterboys formed in London in 1981. Born December 14, 1958, in Edinburgh, Scotland, Scott first became involved in music as the creator of the fanzine Jungleland and later played in a series of local punk outfits. After college, where he studied English and philosophy, Scott and his band, Another Pretty Face, moved to London; following the group's breakup, he formed the Waterboys, so named after a line...
