A great recording of a problematic show - Rating for Recording

This is a wonderful concert-version recording of the score of Chess - a problematic piece that has been rewritten and rewritten to try to get it to work on stage. Part of the problem here is the timeline of the show -- it's hard to fit into a clear timeline that matches the correct ages of the performers, and historical problems abound -- and in current stagings, its hard to in any way make a general audience feel somehow sympathetic to a Soviet political machine. It just doesn't work as a show. But the music is glorious, and this particular cast makes it shine. Owners of the Original Concept Album or the Broadway album should enjoy seeing what was kept in, what was kept out, and how it was all rearranged to try to get it to "fit" in this concert staging. But the voices are wonderful. Josh Groban's Anthem is soul-stirring. If only any of it were believable on stage in story form.

Idina is terribly miscast!!!!

Having watched the concert aired on PBS and listened to the tracks here, Idina Menzel turns in a screamy, tuneless and downright painful at times performance as Florence. She still sounds like a 16 year old girl who just learned how to belt. And given the vocal quality of the rest of this cast, it is nearly embarassing. Get the original London w/Elaine Paige or the original Broadway with Judy Kuhn if you want to hear Florence done right. It's really too bad, because all the other elements of this recording are fantastic. Josh Groban, Adam Pascal, David Bedella and Kerry Ellis all turn in wonderful performances. The orchestra and choir are great, as are the vocal arrangements, and the reworking of the score and book. There is hope for this musical yet. I just hope that if a new production is spawned from this concert, that there is some recasting.

Extraordinary... <33

This is an amazing cast, they have the most amazing voices, im really jealous. I'm speachless, I just saw this today on channel 13 and it was just so beautiful I have no words. YOU WERE AMAZING IDINA AND ADAM AND JOSH!!!
