EDITORS’ NOTES

Already an accomplished writer and artist, Patti Smith became rock’s most original frontwoman with the release of Horses in 1975. “Gloria” and “Land” transform ‘60s garage anthems into writhing, impassioned expressions of punk freedom. With its skewed reggae, “Redondo Beach” showcases the disarming elasticity of Smith’s vocals, while “Birdland” is a narrative epic engulfed in the fire of language. Though the album is driven by a hunger for new forms, Smith never loses faith in the gusty, careening rock ‘n’ roll of “Free Money” and “Break It Up.”

Pure Punk

This tour was the only time I saw Patti Smith. I remember the lights went out and the opening chords to Gloria came on. She appeared draped with an American flag and when the band kicked into full gear the place went nuts. Very incendiary performance and, by far, the most punk show I’ve ever been to.
The record? Just as great. Still own it on vinyl and I just bought it on iTunes so my kid can listen to it on his way to school.
