iTunes Review

Though widely acknowledged as suffering a bit from the “sophomore slump,” 1981’s October is hardly a failure, with “Gloria,” “I Fall Down,” “I Threw a Brick Through a Window,” “Rejoice,” and the album’s stunning closer “Is That All?” leading the charge. The Dublin quartet’s quick success made it imperative for them to get a second album together and while some of the tunes suffer from being rushed along (six months could’ve given them breathing room, but could have cost them their momentum), it’s mostly the sound of a band still finding themselves. Steve Lillywhite’s production continues to add atmospherics to the band’s careful chiseled sound and Bono clearly has the sound of arenas ringing in his ears as his singing reaches for mythic heights with its consistent full-throat attack. The additional material on the “Deluxe Edition” shows the band’s growth as a live act. The 1982 Hammersmith Palais performances of “Gloria” and “I Fall Down,” the BBC sessions of “I Threw A Brick Through a Window,” and the live versions from their debut album Boy (“I Will Follow,” “The Ocean”) are welcomed bonuses that sketch out a stronger idea of the band’s abilities during the early years.

OMG - The Real U2

I loved this album back in my early teens - Now that I am 40, I still think U2 from this period in time was at their height of their powers, subsequent albums like Actung Baby, albeit a very fine piece of work, lacked the intensity this band had in '82 - '87. I feel lucky to have "grown up" during this time when I think that young people now don't know what they missed out today is just as like a stale Pop-Tart. Takes you back...

I am rating lower than a 5 due only to the low bitrate file. This whole series of remastered releases are great and deserve to be heard in all their glory; 128k music files simply cannot reproduce the extended range these remasters provide. It boggles the mind to find these albums are not iTunes +.

Wonderful, Classic, Album Remastered.....And iTunes Offers it in 128K????

C'mon. No iTunes Plus for a remastered classic? Off to buy the CD.

Through a combination of zealous righteousness and post-punk experimentalism, U2 became one of the most popular rock & roll bands in the world -- equally known for their sweeping sound as for their grandiose statements about politics and religion. The Edge provided the group with a signature sound by creating sweeping sonic landscapes with his heavily processed, echoed guitars. Though the Edge's style wasn't conventional, the rhythm section of Larry Mullen, Jr. and Adam Clayton played the songs...
