Album Review

Glory to the Brave is indeed a classic power metal record — no frills or progressive elements here, just speed-laden, melodic, grandiose anthems about honor, glory, and slaying dragons. And the group manages to generally steer clear of the campiness that plagued bands like Manowar. Of note are the pro-Crusades lyrics of "Steel Meets Steel," atypical sentiments in a genre known for rebelling against religion. Overall this stuff isn't new or groundbreaking, but it's performed passionately enough that you'd think you were starting to experience the New Wave of British Heavy Metal the first time around. Hammerfall also gets points for covering Warlord's long-lost classic "Child of the Damned."

A phenomenal album. Really.

This is one of the finest works I've ever heard, rivalled only by Blind Guardian's masterpiece Nightfall in Middle-earth. The Dragon Lies Bleeding: A badass song with a wonderful beat and some very, very cool lyrics. Hammerfall know how to open an album. The Metal Age: "Come with us, offering shelter, from the icy wind and shiver, come with us to the twilight're welcome to the met-AL AGE!" Hammerfall: A rather atypical song, but in a very good way. "Don't lose your faith, don't sit there in silence..." That lyric got stuck in my head for the longest time. I also like the drums on this one. I Believe: Hammerfall prove that they can excellently perform slightly deeper, less metal songs. Child of the Damned: Is it me or does every single band have a song with "of the Damned" in it? Regardless, this is a very good song, but not as good as the rest of the album. It's a cover, though, and so it is not imbued with Hammerfall awesome. Steel Meets Steel: So, I understand there was some steel meeting steel going on here, can you tell us more about that? Hehe. A nice song, with some catchy verses, though the chorus gets a little wearisome after a while for me. Stone Cold: I love this song. It speaks to me of a post-apocalyptic setting. I consider the theme of Gears of War. Unchained: "Out of the fire and into the night, a handful of brave men appeared..." This is a pretty cool song. Took me a while to get the measure of it, but once I did, I loved it. Glory To the Brave: One of the best songs I have ever heard. It is so emotion-provoking and excellent that you can't help but love it. It isn't Noldor(Dead Winter Reigns) but I love it. A phenomenal end to a phenomenal album.

Formed: 1993 in Gothenburg, Sweden

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '90s, '00s, '10s

One of the leading lights of the European metal resurgence in the mid-to-late 1990s, Sweden's Hammerfall helped to bring melodic power metal back to the forefront of a scene that was struggling to find its footing amidst the alt-rock/grunge boom. Founded in Gothenburg in 1993 by ex-Ceremonial Oath guitarist Oscar Dronjak -- the dissolution of that band would also help launch another influential group, In Flames -- Hammerfall took some time getting off the ground. Many of its then-members were doing...
