MAVIS STAPLE & LUCKY PETERSON

This cd is really great. If you are looking to hear some good gospel music. This is it. My favorites are Stand By Me, Precious Lord, Take My Hand, Were You There and etc. I can listen to whole cd without skipping a song and if your a Mavis fan you are in for a treat. This cd will bring you to church no matter where you are.

Mavis is a national treasure!

I have been in love with the voice of Mavis Staples since I was a child -- when my parents introduced me to the music of the Staples Singers. This woman's voice is a national treasure. I have this release on CD and many other Mavis recordings, including her Prince years. No one can exhibit hope and sadness together like this woman -- this is an essential gospel recording, even though it is not a big seller. Many of these songs are Baptist standards and Mavis nails the essence of the songs with just the sound of her worn voice delivering them. I highly recommend this collection and all of the others which are available. We need these songs sung by this voice -- especially in times like these!! More than five stars!!

Awesome

This is Mavis and keyboards, singing with such depth and feeling that's it's impossible to resist. Her performance is so immediate and available that it's like having a personal revival with one of the greatest voices in Gospel and R&B. If you do not feel good about life, if you are down, if you feel ungrounded, THIS is your medicine.

Born in 1939 in Chicago, Mavis Staples achieved wide recognition as lead singer for the Staple Singers. She first recorded solo for Stax subsidiary Volt in 1969. Subsequent efforts included a Curtis Mayfield-produced soundtrack on Curtom, a disappointing nod to disco for Warner in 1979, a misguided stab at electro-pop with Holland-Dozier-Holland in 1984, and an uneven album for Paisley Park. Staples has a rich contralto voice that has neither the range of Aretha Franklin nor the power of Patti LaBelle....
