iTunes Editors’ Notes

By the time he released his debut album in 1986, Kool Moe Dee was already a veteran of New York's hip-hop scene and a college graduate with a communications degree. Although emcees like Rakim would soon revolutionize the art of rhyming, Moe Dee embodied irreproachable authority. At the same time, he was musically openminded. His debut is a cipher for all the emergent styles in mid-'80s hip-hop, from the skeletal bass of “Go See the Doctor” to the electro of “Bad Mutha” to the tricky R&B of “Rock Steady,” produced by a soon-to-be-famous teenager named Teddy Riley.

Customer Reviews

Much respect to Moe Dee for everything he did for hip hop. However, his records were very hit and miss overall. This record has a few gems (go c the doc, do u know...,bad mutha but for the most part these tracks are pretty wack.I feel bad for him for never really hooking up with a great producer for an entire record. Once again, mad respect to KMD because there probably wouldn't have been a hip hop as we know it today without him ,but pick and choose tracks wisely with his output.

This one got him in and opened the ears to those of us who weren't familiar with him. Fan since then and he's still in rotation in the car.

The single earned him a contract with Jive Records, for which he recorded three successful late-'80s albums, dominated by his skillful speed-raps. A long-running feud with LL Cool J — who...
