Album Review

David Peaston was one of gospel's most demonstrative, majestic talents while working with his family, which included his mother, Martha Bass, and sister, Fontella Bass. He acquired a national television following by dominating the weekly contests on the syndicated Showtime At The Apollo and then in 1989 made a huge impression with his debut album on Geffen. While it wasn't an enormous hit, it generated enough publicity and favorable response to get Peaston a spot as the opening act for Gladys Knight.

Where's David now?

With a very distinctive voice, I for one am surprised that only one album was released by this man. In my opinion he ranks up there with Luther and Teddy, it brings back memories of his Showtime at the Apollo's God Bless the Child rendition, the first time that I heard David sing I thought that he'd go far. Just disappointed that it ended just as fast as it started.

David Peaston is a great singer and just so everyone knows he did release another album entitled "Mixed Emotions" on Oct 15 1991. Request it on itunes so we can finally download it David Peaston Mixed Emotions released in 1991 with MCA Records

And am so glad to have this opportunity to listen to him again and again and again....This is one of those rare albums where every song is FABULOUS!

Genre: Jazz

Years Active: '80s, '90s

David Peaston's inability to gain a foothold on the urban contemporary scene is one of the mysteries of the late '80s and early '90s. His huge, bombastic voice reflects great family roots; his mother Martha Bass was one of the Clara Ward Singers and a great gospel performer, while his sister Fontella Bass has equally distinguished gospel and soul credentials. He started out as a teacher and after being laid off in 1981, Peaston moved from St. Louis to New York. He began doing session work and auditioned...
