Editors’ Notes

The Originals featured some of Motown’s greatest backup singers, and they were often referred to as the label’s best-kept secret. The group's plaintive soul and sweet incantations yielded unstoppable sonic warmth between 1966 and 1976. Highlights here include “Baby I’m for Real,” “The Bells,” and “We Can Make It,” which mix the subtle street-corner doo-wop of Detroit’s old North End neighborhood with the steady hand of producer and cowriter Marvin Gaye. The Northern soul fave “Suspicion,” a Holland-Dozier-Holland rarity, is packed with the chiming verve and sugary melancholy of classic Motown. The hit “Down to Love Town” simply brings the disco down.

The Very Best of The Originals

Hopefully iTunes will see fit to expand their collection of this wonderful group who brought so much joy and emotion to me and my contemporaries.

Often called "Motown's best-kept secret," the Originals scored only a handful of chart hits during their lengthy career, most notably the powerful 1969 ballad "Baby I'm for Real," but their behind-the-scenes contributions as songwriters and backing vocalists cement their place in the label's enduring legacy. The Originals were led by singer Freddie Gorman, a Detroit native who in 1957 formed the Fideletones with longtime friend Brian Holland. After issuing "Pretty Girl" on Aladdin Records in 1959,...
