Editors’ Notes

Punk rock took a decidedly outrageous and political tone when it hit the U.K.; Sex Pistols manager Malcolm McLaren lived by the credo "Cash from Chaos." Although he chose the group members for maximum visual impact, they turned out to have instrumental and songwriting chops wise beyond their years. Drummer Paul Cook and guitarist Steve Jones created a wall of sound (with Jones handling nearly all of Sid Vicious' bass parts on record), made only more impressive by producer Chris Thomas. It's over this uncompromising sound that Johnny Rotten breaks through with some of the most thrilling vocals ever committed to tape. His anger, his rage, his sarcasm, and his wit come blasting forth on pure rock 'n' roll classics such as "God Save the Queen," "Anarchy in the U.K.," "Pretty Vacant," and "EMI," a railing assault on the Pistols' former record label. There are those who consider the earlier versions on Spunk to be even better. But even if that's possibly so, Never Mind the Bollocks is among the most important and enduring albums of all time.

Customer Reviews

What happened? The Greatest Album Ever Made has gotten shoddy treatment. First, the album is not called "Nevermind the Bollocks," it's "Never Mind the Bollocks." This ain't Nirvana, iTunes. Second, the "Pretty Vacant" here is an OUTTAKE and not identified as such! Stick with the vinyl, if you can find it. iTunes -- you're pretty vacant. And you don't care.

iTunes took the greatest rock album ever and screwed it up with a terrible muddy master and a horrible outtake of Pretty Vacant. They couldn't even spell it correctly. BUY THE CD, PEOPLE. THIS VERSION IS A SCREAMING, _______, BLOODY MESS. Disgraceful.

Formed: 1975 in London, England

Genre: Rock

Years Active: '70s, '90s

The Sex Pistols may have only been together for two years in the late '70s, but they changed the face of popular music. Through their raw, nihilistic singles and violent performances, the band revolutionized the idea of what rock & roll could be. In England, the group was considered dangerous to the very fabric of society and was banned across the country; in America, they didn't have the same impact, but countless bands in both countries were inspired by the sheer sonic force of their music, while...
