EDITORS’ NOTES

In selecting a potential composer for his surprise hit reboot of the Godzilla franchise, English director Gareth Edwards says he “created a playlist on my phone, drag and dropped my favorite soundtracks, and the person who got high score was Alexandre Desplat.” And when Desplat saw Monsters, Edwards’ 2010 microbudget-miracle feature debut, he was struck “by the attention paid to the characters. That’s very rare.” The composer dryly admits another attraction: "I always try to do movies that are different from the ones I've done before. And this is a perfect example.” Desplat explains that “Godzilla needed something very organic. That’s why I put together an orchestra, which was also really stupidly big. As big as Godzilla! Otherwise, if it wasn’t big enough I would’ve had to stuff the score with electronics, which I certainly didn’t want to do.” Edwards notes “it’s a mix of locations, an ensemble piece. But [Alexandre] created a thread that made it one big whole. He's elevated our movie, for sure.”
