Subtle Intensity

I've been following Liz since she and Michael King performed as Press in the basement of the Midtown Cafe in Birmingham, MI. I was always impressed by Liz's gritty, but satin voice and how she applied it to the alternative standards of the day. Almost as amazing was the strong, minimalist backbeat that she created with a drum machine, giving a provocative garage feel to sets of otherwise delicate songs. Her composition and writing skills were still rather raw, but you knew she had the all the tools, even back then. Fast-forward 23 years: Liz still has proclivities for both the powerful and the fanciful in her music. She's subtle and draws you in close to with emotive riffs and harmonies and then she rattles your soul with blasts of rage, angst, hunger, and yearning. WUSD is a rocky road of passion. It’s a soundtrack to an array of relationships, whether pleasing, intense or dysfunctional. "Furthest Distant Orbiting Satellite," a song about Larin's relationship and estrangement from her father beacons the listener to reevaluate his own relationships and it succeeds. The song travels far into the listener’s psyche that it attaches itself as an anthem that evokes regret and longing remembrance. However, “You Mistook Me for a Boy” is the most underrated track in this collection. It’s an angry, yet sexy one-sided argument. We’ve all been there before: It’s that unexpected, deserved tongue-lashing that you got from your partner after you took her for granted just one too many times. The track also well defines this album and Liz’s music. It’s the irony and polarity that such a superb musician can please you, tease you, and then rip you to shreds with her next chord change and breath. If you’re looking for background music, buy yourself a nice, polished Norah Jones record. But if you want your heartstrings strummed, tweaked, or even kicked, Liz is your gal. --CW

Wake Up, Start dreaming

Any artist willing to tackle Led Zepplin, and do it incredible justice, has got to be applauded. If you're looking for a great voice, meaningful lyrics and style, you've got to listen to Liz. Live or recorded, she pulls you in with sultry sophistication.

Better and Better

WUSD is the kind of 'jump' album that few artists are able to create. Not a true departure from 'O-miz' and 'Merry', this album is a growth spurt complete with intense musical drama and true poetry. Her intensity on tracks like 'Frequency' is matched skillfully by her internalization on 'Breathe'. Check this album out, and give it a few listens -- you won't be anything but inspired. BTW, We in Detroit are so very lucky to have Liz local to us. If you like her albums, you really must see her in person.
