Liverpool's Good Intentions don't sound a thing like the city's most famous sons, The Beatles, but rather like the country roots of the Fab Four's American influences. The three-part harmonies are tight and unbreakable; the band features the husband-and-wife core of R. Peter Davies and Gabrielle Monk, along with their professional third wheel and longtime friend Frank Roskell. Davies' decision to appear in Michael Apted's British TV documentary 56Up (part of the long-running 7Up series) was solely to boost the profile of this group, which had already won a British Country Music Award for Americana Act of the Year. The trio smartly went to California to record this album with Rick Shea, who added mandolin to the opener, "Gold Watch and Chain," and grabbed pedal steel and dobro man Greg Leisz to give the right backing to these fine Americana tunes. "Hank's Last Ride" pays homage to Hank Williams Sr. Dave Jackson adds piano to the Gram Parsons/Emmylou Harris–like duet "I Dreamed About You."
