10 Songs, 35 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

Following a major-label leap and the departure of keyboardist Katie Toupin, Indiana trio Houndmouth opted for reinvention. Bright, stylish, and meticulously produced, Golden Age swaps the band’s rustic Americana for the dance-floor thrills of groups like Tame Impala and MGMT—a sound both big and humble, retro and now, with flashes of disco (“This Party”) and even golden-age hip-hop (“Coast to Coast”). And though diehards may cry heresy, the anthemic core of the band’s songwriting remains intact.

Digging it

Do we want bands to make the same album over and over again? No, no we do not. Be like Houndmouth and try something new.

Unfortunately, it's not just a bad dream

I gave this album a chance...a good few listens all the way through on Youtube. I wanted to buy it. I really did. I've bought all of Houndmouth's stuff and seen them live. However, this record is just not any good. I'm not expecting this band to make the same album over and over, but I didn't expect some electro-synthesized poppy garbage either. I thought when I heard their first single from the new album, I was just having a bad dream. Unfortunately, it's not just a bad dream...it's a brutal nightmare that has left my ears bleeding.
