Because Mel Tormé co-wrote "The Christmas Song," it was a surprise to many of his fans that when he recorded this full-length Christmas album for Telarc in 1992, it was his first. Since he is backed by a large orchestra (conducted by Keith Lockhart) in addition to his regular trio and the emphasis is on ballad renditions, Tormé does not get many opportunities to scat and swing on this pleasing but unadventurous set. However, the 16-track album, which includes several medleys and a pair of instrumentals for the orchestra, features tasteful and melodic Tormé interpretations of 20 Christmas-associated songs, and the album is worthwhile, if not essential.
One of the best Christmas Albums you can buy.
In no way does this cd let you down. Torme's perfect whole hearted melodies make each song soar with wonder and amazement. Christmas is not the same without this Mel Torme disc to compliment any evening with family or friends. A true, true master of his craft. Buy the cd, and you won't regret it.
My Favorite Christmas Album!
I'd always liked Mel's singing, but really did not appreciate his gifts until I bought this album. The music is wonderful with the Cincinnati Sinfonietta and Mel's session musicians. Plenty of Christmas classics, but with fresh interpretations, and some unique tunes as well. The musical arrangements are very well done and the musicianship is impressive. Mel is at turns playful, serious, and full of zest. I find him in wonderful command of his impressive vocal instrument on this album. I play this all through Christmas. A later addition to my holidy music collection, but definitely my favorite!
My ABSOLUTE favorite Christmas Album!
I actually listen to this off and on all year...but during the holidays it is PERFECT. This even surpasses my Nat King Cole Christmas albums, which is almost unspeakable.
