Editors’ Notes

While they never quite blew up like their contemporaries Dinosaur Jr. and Pavement, Western Massachusetts rabble-rousers Sebadoh were just as crucial, and remain hugely influential to anyone making indie rock and/or "lo-fi" music. Originally a duo of Lou Barlow and Eric Gaffney, they added Jason Lowenstein in the early ‘90s, expanding their sound while adding a solid middle-ground between Lou's tearstained tales of heartbreak and inadequacy, and Eric's free-for-all noise mayhem. Smash Your Head was their first release on Sub Pop, and features many cuts from the somewhat obscure foreign records Rocking the Forest and Sebadoh vs Helmet. The result is a great mix of songwriting styles, with pop ballads like "Brand New Love," spastic freakouts such as "Cry Sis," the straight-ahead hard rock of "Junk Bonds", and a couple of impressive covers, including Nick Drake's "Pink Moon." This is a perfect example of mid-career Sebadoh, when indie rock was still rockin', and more than just a code word for whiny white guys.

Formed by singer/songwriter Lou Barlow while he was the bassist for Dinosaur Jr. in the late '80s, Sebadoh's music was a virtual catalog of '80s alternative rock and '90s indie rock, featuring everything from jangle pop to noise-rock experimentalism. After being kicked out of Dinosaur in 1989, Barlow turned his attention toward Sebadoh, a home-recording project that he and drummer/songwriter Eric Gaffney...
