Editors’ Notes

To celebrate its 40th anniversary, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road is available in various configurations, starting with a straight remaster of the entire album and expanding from there into deluxe and super-deluxe editions that add cover versions of songs from the album, bonus Elton John songs, and a concert performance known as “Live at Hammersmith 1973.” Upon its 1973 release, Goodbye Yellow Brick Road was intended as a major event: a double album in an era where double albums meant an artistic seriousness on the level of Bob Dylan, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The 11-minute opener, “Funeral for a Friend/Love Lies Bleeding,” remains as much a fan favorite as “Candle in the Wind” and “Benny and the Jets,” two of the album’s highest-profile hits. The live versions from ’73 prove that John could reproduce the songs' complexity on the road. In fact, John’s multiple talents as a craftsman capable of writing songs in any genre led to the album’s widespread appeal and sales topping 31 million worldwide.
