iTunes Review

Eight albums and 20 years deep, a determination to stretch metal’s boundaries remains sacrosanct for the Californians. Another key Deftones tenet—bonding aggression with vulnerability—rages throughout an album that captures a band invigorated and reflective. “There’s a new strange, godless demon awake inside me” sings Chino Moreno on cacophonous opener “Prayers / Triangles” and it sets the rapturous tone. The juddering “Doomed User” amps up the drama while “Geometric Headdress”, “(L)mirl” and “Phantom Bride” are piercing examples of the band’s propensity for melody.

I've been a Deftones fan since '95. Took the bus to the mall to buy "Adrenaline". While I favor some of their albums over others, I can listen to anyone of them with fondness. With that said, this album is an absolute departure from everything they've released, and not necessarily in a good way...

Chino, despite his numerous side projects, looms too large on this album, musically. Everyone who follows this band understands the dynamics. The push and pull between Stef and Chino is the singular element that makes the Deftones sound distinct.

The edge, and grit, that Stef once provided during their song writing has been abandoned in favor of Chino's more soft, and eclectic stylings. That balance between the dark, and the light that used to be present is non-existent. Stef sat in the passenger's seat during the song writing process, and it shows.

The result is an album that still puts Chino's unique vocals proudly on display, over music that sounds like some alternative/Weezeresque hybrid with a slight edge. Patiently awaiting Eros...

Am I the only one that has heard the full album. It's unfocused , poorly produced, and easily forgettable ... At best

Gonna be sic!

This band is like wine, gets better with age

Deftones were one of the first groups to alternate heavy riffs and screamed vocals with more ethereal music and hushed singing -- spawning a fair amount of imitators in their wake. The group first formed in Sacramento, California during 1988, when then high-school students Stephen Carpenter (guitar), Abe Cunningham (drums), and Chino Moreno (vocals) first began to jam together. They chose the name Deftones and began playing out locally shortly thereafter, going through several different bass players...
