iTunes Review

“Gorilla Manor” is the nickname given to the SoCal dwelling where most of the members of Local Natives once lived, and one imagines the name is apt and the good times were many. The California band’s debut pays homage to those good old days and the music it inspired, with sunny, Afrobeat-tinged pop songs that flitter and swirl and bubble. Bridging the lofty pop thrill of Fleet Foxes and the airy, carefree party-vibe of Vampire Weekend, Local Natives have found the sweet spot: three-part harmonies reach for the sky while pianos and glinting guitars dance and swagger, and the graceful strings on several songs are never relegated to token status. “Sun Hands” skips along until it turns dark, a chorus of voices sputtering the adamant chorus line just before guitars shred the peace, and the dreamy, mandolin-inflected “Airplanes” is a delightful ode to an unknown grandparent; it’s charming and sentimental, but in a good way. Covering the Talking Heads is a daring move, but their percussion-heavy treatment of “Warning Sign” is wonderfully bold, using the basic bones of the song but dressing it up with the Natives’ own indigenous sound.

Breathtaking

I first heard this band on my local NPR station, 89.7, out of Northern Kentucky University. After hearing the track "Wide Eyes" i sat in my car for 2 more songs so i could find out who the artist was. I have been eagerly anticipating this release and i have to say it has surpassed my expectations. My very first reaction was a comparison to Band of Horses. After listening more, they sort of remind me of Fleet Foxes. While Local Natives may inspire glimpses of these other great bands, where they succed the most is bringing their own unique sound to the table. Sort of ethereal, the harmonies swell and sway while spacey guitars complement the head bobbing beat created by bass and drums. I am completely drawn in to this album and can't wait to hear more from this band for many years to come.

Very Impressive Debut

After recently receiving a 25$ itunes giftcard i spent literally hours surfing the itunes store for decent alternative/indie music that i hadnt already listened to. After almost giving up i stumbled upon this gem of an album. Local Natives have created a an amazing wall of sound with their debut Gorilla Manor. The best way i could describe the sound would be if Grizzly Bear got wasted and had sex with the Fray and their baby grew up listening to the Shins. Everything from the tribal-like drums to the delicate vocal harmonies and the crashing orchestras swelling in the backround help paint an intricately layered soundscape that begs to be listened to again and again. For 8$ theres no reason not to BUY THIS NOW.

New Favorite Band!

I have been waiting for what seems like forever for this album to release in the U.S. and I'm so excited that it finally has! I found these guys on a random website and immediately fell in love. I suggest it to everyone. My favorite is wide eyes but every song is quite amazing! Good luck to them at Coachella!!
