Editors’ Notes

Falun, Sweden’s Sabaton is still musing on war-related themes on its seventh studio album, Carolus Rex. This is the last recording with guitarists Rikard Sundén and Oskar Montelius, keyboardist Daniel Mÿhr, and drummer Daniel Mullback. Needless to say, a palpable anger blasts from singer Joakim Broden’s voice right from the opening onslaught of “The Lion from the North,” a galloping adventure-metal epic replete with dramatic string arrangements and a sprawling choir of backing vocals. The grandiose “A Lifetime of War” plays like the national anthem for a country invented by Sabaton’s music, as towering guitar leads intertwine and ascend victoriously over cinematic-sounding orchestral accompaniment. A roomy church organ playing foreboding notes introduces “The Carolean's Prayer,” an over-the-top standout that sounds inspired by Game of Thrones. The title track sounds so sinister that it should be listened to while drinking the blood of your enemy’s pet falcon from a jewel-encrusted chalice.

Their Finest

This is quite possibly the finest album Sabaton has produced to date. While no album may surpass the star-power and greatness of "The Art of War", this certainly takes Sabaton's career to the next level, keeping die-hard fans such as myself more than happy, and casual fans knocking at their doorstep. In other words, this album is absolutely superb, and shall be considered their most complete work. Sabaton at their peak.

Yes to this album

I am a bit disappointed that you can't find Sabaton's cover of Twilight of the Thunder God from Amon Amarth here in the US, but this is one heck of an album! Buy it now!

This may be Sabaton at their best, coming from Coat of Arms which was all right, this album takes their sound to a new level. I recommend getting the whole album.

Swedish band Sabaton have been a major force in the power metal field since the mid-2000s, but had to battle through significant difficulties to get there, which may explain their eventual creative obsession with everything war-related. Originally founded in 1999 and comprised of Joakim Brodén (vocals and keyboards), Rickard Sundén (guitar), Oskar Montelius (guitar), Daniel Myhr (keyboards, beginning in 2006), Pär Sundström (bass), and Richard Larsson (drums), the enterprising group quickly produced...
