Gottschalk at its best

Gottschalk is a truly American composer. He borrows from many cultures—African, Spanish, French, and more—and creatively incorporates them in original ways. He visited the world as a rock star of his time. Listening to Gottschalk is like accompanying him on a tour of the western world's 19th-century music. Alan Mandel brings out the best in this music: the deeply charming melodies, the impressive pianistic work, and the layered and complex rhythms. This should be the Gottschalk album you buy because the music shines and will have you listening again and again!

Alan Roger Mandel is an important American pianist, especially known for his performances of nineteenth-century American music and rags. He began taking piano lessons when he was three years old, and stayed with his first teacher, Heidi Spielter, until he was seventeen. After an auspicious debut at New York's Town Hall in 1948, he entered the Juilliard School of Music in New York in 1953, where he studied with Rhose Lhévinne; he graduated in 1956, earned his master's degree in 1957, and then studied...
