Album Review

West coast troublemakers Mother Superior cleaned out the closets (and installed a few new cubbyholes) for 2008's Grande, a collection of live cuts, discarded bits, re-recorded nuggets, reconfigured favorites, and new slabs of hard rock that will please both longtime fans and those not yet schooled in the sweet, classic rock-tinged milieu of this road-tested, hardworking American act. Highlights include rumbling, bottom-heavy remixes of 2005's "Get That Girl" and "Meltdown," a sparse, bluesy, and brooding rendition of 2004's (then) string-heavy "Four Walls," live versions of "Five Stars," "Jaded Little Princess," and "Beg Borrow Steal," and a couple of brand new tunes that include a faithful, if slightly more sinister take on the Beatles classic "Happiness Is a Warm Gun."

Playing a combination of blues, soul, and classic American rock & roll, Mother Superior became a popular club act in the Los Angeles area during the late '90s. Guitarist Jim Wilson, bassist Marcus Blake, and drummer Jason Mackenroth released several independent CDs over that period, including 1996's The Heavy Soul Experience of Mother Superior, 1997's Kaleidoscope, and 1998's Deep.
