Album Review

Australia and hard rock certainly go hand in hand — after all, the land down under has spawned such "manly" acts over the years as AC/DC, Rose Tattoo, and Radio Birdman, among countless others (eh, perhaps best to skip over Silverchair). But the continent best known for kangaroos, koalas, Foster's Lager, and Crocodile Dundee is not exactly renowned as a chief prog metal or death metal import — yet the technically proficient quintet Alchemist originated from Canberra, Australia. Long including elements from both aforementioned metal subgenres, Alchemist unleashed their sixth full-length overall, Tripsis, in 2007. Loaded with tricky bits and heavily "textured" metal, Tripsis will probably not be most headbangers' first choice to crank on their stereo while getting ready to raise hell on a Friday night. However, for those who welcome challenging extreme metal, Tripsis is loaded with goodies, especially such ditties as "Wrapped in Guilt" and "Nothing in No Time." Overall, a worthy metallic amalgam.

Customer Reviews

One of the best albums of the year, amazing.

This album is amazing. Middle eastern melodies, metal craziness, layered, textured soundscapes. It's a must buy for any fan of metal who is into the more layered stuff.

Skilled musicians, excellent music

I've gotten to the point where most new or current metal just isn't doing it for me anymore, but this album is astoundingly good. These are obviously real musicians who know how to play their instruments, and they assemble disparate parts into songs which genuinely hold your interest. And the parts aren't overly complicated, either -- this isn't following the "complexity for complexity's sake" trend popular among many metal bands today -- but they make it all work. Again, it holds your interest musically even on repeated listens. If you're looking to sample one track, try "Nothing In No Time" and you'll see how good this band is.

Years Active: '80s, '90s, '00s

Throughout their decade-plus existence, and despite releasing a string of singularly original and unconventional albums, Australia's Alchemist has remained one of the best-kept secrets in metal. Starting from their modest roots in late-'80s thrash metal, the quartet has developed into a state-of-the-art metal band, combining influences that range from the earliest experiments in '70s progressive rock...
