Bareilles Live = nothing short of amazing

While this may not be a live recording with a crowd of fans cheering her on and listening to her always witty and sarcastic banter, what we have is our first taste of a well-mixed studio live set, and Bareilles succeeds where many others fail. Her voice is unequivocal in its beauty and power. She feels at home on these recordings, and that's because this is how Sara Bareilles is truly meant to be heard: stripped of overdubbing and harmonies, and void of fancy and plentiful instruments that muddle up the recording - just a piano, guitar, drums, and a girl with a voice. Many The Miles and Bottle It Up, while being great new additions to Sara's repertoire, seemed lacking somewhere (or maybe it was that they had too much happening on "Little Voice"). They finally feel jazzy, soulful, and very Sara on this new album. When she's able to just let her voice go and really hit it, you can't help but smile at the allure and charm she unfolds in her music. Gravity has always been one of Sara's strongest songs. She's been singing it since college, and with reason: it's a hauntingly beautiful number. Here, she makes it even more heartbreaking through the rawness and simplicity of the piece. Her cover of Peter Gabriel's "In Your Eyes", though, is the real treat of the album. She makes this song her own, and I fell in love with it all over again. While I'd been hoping and anticipating for iTunes to do this very thing for so long, and thus built up very high expectations, this album doesn't dissappoint. My only wish was that it had been longer. I want a piano-only Fairytale (hear it on "Careful Confessions" to see what I mean), and I would've absolutely loved Little Voice (the song), which was cut from the album, to have been included. But you can't have everything. At least what we have here is a live set worthy of being made and hopefully bought by her many, many growing fans. Sara, you've got nowhere to go but up. And I'm loving the ride.

A gifted songwriter and a versatile pianist with no formal training, Sara Bareilles burst onto the pop scene with a naturally skilled voice that ranged from powerful and soulful to sweet and gentle, earning her instant comparisons to Fiona Apple and Norah Jones.
