EDITORS’ NOTES

As mellow as Tom Petty always manages to sound, his definitive work with The Heartbreakers—compiled here from 1976 to 1993—is actually an unruly cross-section of bluesy Southern twang, sunbaked California jangle and British Invasion–style pop sophistication. It all coalesces into some of the sharpest, warmest, most resonant songwriting in U.S. rock history. For all his trademark nonchalance (“Don’t Do Me Like That,” “Free Fallin,’” etc.), the cruise-controlled rocker cranks up the jittery propulsion on “I Need to Know” and the eternal anthem that is “American Girl.”

R.I.P. TOM!!!!!!

Had to come over here and buy a copy of "Mary Jane's Last Dance" and play it as loud as possible. One last jam for ol' Tom Petty. So many memories.

Tom Petty's Greatest Hits

Fantastic band, Fantastic album! Saw them in Missouri during one of our Anniversary weekends. We've been married going on 39 years, and concerts have always been our Anniversary gifts to each other, & Tom Petty was one of our favorite ones ever! Thanks man for the memories, and keep on "Rockin"!
