Editors’ Notes

This anniversary edition of R.E.M.'s controversial major-label debut—1988's Green—features a remaster of the original album, plus a concert from Nov. 10, 1989, at Greensboro Coliseum. That show, from the second-to-last night of a tour, shows an extremely tight quartet. College radio fans were always nervous when a beloved group made the jump from an indie label to a major. However, R.E.M.'s rising profile due to earlier hit songs such as "The One I Love" and "It's the End of the World as We Know It (And I Feel Fine)" seemed to demand that the group move on up. Green includes the meditative cuts "You Are the Everything," "World Leader Pretend," and "The Wrong Child" to balance out the bubblegum pop of "Stand" and "Pop Song 89," as well as the anti-war "Orange Crush," somewhat of a redux of "The One I Love." The concert runs through songs from R.E.M.'s entire career up to that point, with an emphasis on its more recent albums at the time.

That better not be styrofoam, pal!

I've been waiting for an audio version of Tourfilm for years. Sure there's an import called "The Dream" with most of the songs from this tour, but for an official release this is awesome!

This is the album that really got me into this band. Peter Bucks jangily guitars Stipe singing through the megaphone and the introduction of the Mandolin into this band. The Live show from the tour was one that I was priviledged to see. The debut for Warner Bros is the stepping stone of them becoming the biggest band in the world with the album that would follow.

Great album from a great band!

I love R.E.M.'s work and Green is their finest album. '80s Pop combined perfectly with Alternative Rock prove to be the qualifications for a wonderful album and group. "Pop Song 89", "Stand", and "Orange Crush" are my personal favorite takeaways, but exploring all of the tracks on this LP can turn out to be a fun afternoon.

R.E.M. marked the point when post-punk turned into alternative rock. When their first single, "Radio Free Europe," was released in 1981, it sparked a back-to-the-garage movement in the American underground. While there were a number of hardcore and punk bands in the U.S. during the early '80s, R.E.M. brought guitar pop back into the underground lexicon. Combining ringing guitar hooks with mumbled, cryptic lyrics and a D.I.Y. aesthetic borrowed from post-punk, the band simultaneously sounded traditional...
