For his second album, This Year's Model, Elvis Costello assembled the Attractions, one of the finest backing groups in rock history, to deliver the knockout punch to what time has shown to be some of Costello’s best and most enduring material. This 2008 reissue includes a live February 1978 concert from the Warner Theatre in Washington, DC that has circulated for years as a bootleg. It’s similar in tone to the “Live at the El Mocambo” show that was issued with the 2-1/2 Years boxed set, the Attractions playing tight and fierce, injecting vibrant life into songs from Costello’s My Aim is True debut and This Year’s Model. “Red Shoes,” “Watching the Detectives,” “Miracle Man” and the “Dallas” version of “Less Than Zero” where Costello twists his references towards America — Lee Harvey Oswald standing in for British fascist party leader Oswald Mosely — receive absolutely brutal treatment. A solo rendition of the at-the-time unreleased “Chemistry Class” proved Costello was in prime position. Any case for the Attractions as an all-time legendary rock n’ roll band begins here. Their kinetic power is unrivaled.
I was fortunate enough to live in NYC between 1977 and 1981. I saw Elvis and the Attactions several times, and can attest to the fact that the Attractions were flawless musicians, and one of the greatest rock bands ever. I was somewhat disappointed by the live set on the Deluxe Edition of "My Aim is True." It was historically interesting, but it did not have the "in your face" energy of the Attractions. It was as if Elvis and the Attractions were still getting to know each other. However, in the Deluxe Edition of "this Year's Model", we hear the Attractions at their best -- loud, fast and tight. Not a note or beat out of place. Each song is a treat. Buy this CD.
Best recording of the "New Wave/Punk" era.
Those of us who were around during the late 70's remember Elvis bursting onto the scene in the mid-late 70's. "This Years Model" is (in my opinion) his strongest record. Elvis had an amazing run of several years ...and several recordings where he seemingly could do no wrong. This is in my top 5 recordings of all time. I know I might get some argument from The Clash fans out there but "This Years Model", "Armed Forces" and "My Aim is True" have to be the most impressive first 3 recordings ever...yes including the Beatles.
best first timer song
This album is great. My favorite song is the Lipstick Vogue. It is my first time listening, and I am hooked on the song!
