Pride of Oak Lane

I can say without a doubt that Random's "Mega Ran" is far and away the greatest appropriation of 8-bit sampling in any genre, hands down. Not only do the recognizable melodies from what is arguably the greatest 8-bit soundtrack of any game blend seamlessly into his beats, lyrically he manages to utilize the Mega Man mythos as the perfect metaphor for his own trials and tribulations. Ran manages to cram enough video game references to satisfy even the geekiest among us (whether it's namechecking Leeroy Jenkins or reminiscing about getting 100 lives in super mario "kicking turtles on a step") without resorting to the self-absorbed geek pride that is embarrassingly prevalent in the lyrics of far too many nerdcore lyricists. Not that I would ever lump Random in with that genre, as "Mega Ran" is a bit of a departure from his usual forte. Even those who simply love dope beats and smart lyrics will find plenty to enjoy here.

Works on both levels

This is not only an interesting theme album, it's also a legit hip-hop album - tight beats, slick rhymes. The creativeness of the Mega Man theme is by itself worth a listen, but you'll be pleasantly surprised by the booming bass and metaphors that would make even the most jaded music listener crack a smile. My personal favorites are "Shadowman" and "Final Battle," but I suggest downloading the whole album so you can follow the back story.

awesome. funny. smart.

I must say I was pleasantly surprised. great for gamers and hip hoppers alike. awesome concept!
