14 Songs, 55 Minutes

EDITORS’ NOTES

Bill Frisell is one of modern music’s most respected guitarists, with a moody sound and technique that can be ID’d within seconds of hearing it. With a grade-A backing group of bassist Tony Scherr, drummer/vibraphonist Kenny Wollesen, and guitar/pedal steel whiz Greg Leisz, Frisell tackles some famous songs and many instrumentals, giving them an extended instrumental workout. “Pipeline” is expanded into a seven-minute trip. “Turn, Turn, Turn” uses The Byrds’ interpretation and stretches its common phrases into suspended time. Brian Wilson’s “Surfer Girl” has its gorgeous melody brought to the surface. A stunning, stirring collection worth every moment.

Couldn’t be better

I missed his performance of this with Joshua Light Show last month. Made up for it by playing this in our planetarium. Yes. An epiphany. Thanks, Bill!

Could have been called, Guitar in the Time Tunnel

Wow - Frisell's treatment of these classic guitar songs showed so much respect, even when he and the band take them into new spaces. I love this album. So glad that my local jazz stations played Pipeline this morning on the drive to work, inspired this purchase, and the purchase of two tickets to see him in concert in two weeks.
