Album Review

On his second Orchestra album and fourth solo album overall, Brian Setzer extends the genre exercise in jump blues he first tackled on The Brian Setzer Orchestra album. Of course, Setzer, best known as the singer/guitarist from the Stray Cats, is no stranger to retro stylings, and the guitar-dominated, yet horn-filled arrangements of the orchestra are not all that far removed from the Cats' rockabilly update, especially given Setzer's fervent singing and characteristic lead work. (A new version of the Cats' "Rumble in Brighton" fits right in.) And he's not shy, leading off with a Stevie Ray Vaughan cover, "The House Is Rockin'," swaggering his way through the Gene Pitney chestnut "Town Without Pity," and collaborating with ex-Clash leader Joe Strummer on the set-ending "Sammy Davis City." Like Joe Jackson, who tried this kind of thing with his excellent Jumpin' Jive album, Setzer takes this music seriously and turns in a credible version of it through a combination of craft and conviction.

The Best BSO Album Ever!!!

The only thing missing from this album is Mr. Setzer's " Rock This Town". This is the perfect album. Great Hard Rock guitar with the jazz of the horns. Spend the 9.99 for the album. A great deal. I paid over 40 dollars in 1996 for 3 copies on CD.

This was my first BSO album and it is by far best collection of tunes. I would highly recommend buying this album. There is a sweeping variety in styles and tempos to enjoy. There are very few albums that I claim to like every track- this is one of them.

Brian Setzer performed this trick not just once but twice, first as the leader of the Stray Cats, the trio that brought rockabilly back into the charts during the '80s, then he helped popularize the swing revival of the '90s with the Brian Setzer Orchestra. Both of these sounds were grounded in the '50s -- that's when rockabilly was born but also the heyday of the kind of jump...
