iTunes Review

On her first full-length solo project, B-52’s mainstay Kate Pierson combines kitschy fun with socially conscious commentary amid a frothy mix of ‘80s new wave and contemporary pop sounds. Guitars and Microphones radiates positive vibes, whether it affirms artistic freedom (“Throw Down the Roses”), stands up for nature (“Bring Your Arms”), or sings out for LGBT pride (“Mister Sister”). Bolstered by songwriting input from executive producer Sia Furler and guitar riffage from The Strokes’ Nick Valensi, Pierson turns the album into a freewheeling celebration of life, love, and cosmic liberation.

This song rocks like an anthem should

Having transgenderism in your home makes you heart-sensitive to the subject. Not so with Kate's wonderful song. Being a musician you understand the limitations of time for an MP3 single. Kate hits many of the early commonalities of exploration with the 'other side '- agonizing over being one sex of spirit and assigned to the other- longing to be identified as a "beautiful" girl." Based on all the ambiguity in B-52 song lyrics - here, well, it is ambiguity and it isn't. "Beautiful" is a metaphor - not only for being a "beautiful girl" in the mirror, but self validating beauty - the kind that is not only felt inside but seen - outside. Kate is a longstanding friend and ally of the LGBTQ family. This topic was something she did not have to take on.
Thank you so much, Kate.

No one can accuse Kate Pierson of rushing into a solo career -- Pierson had spent close to 40 years as a member of the iconic new wave dance combo the B-52s before she decided it was time to step out with her first solo album. Kate Pierson was born in Weehawken, New York on April 27, 1948; seemingly born with a political consciousness, Pierson was a serious Bob Dylan fan in junior high, and was a member of a local folk group that specialized in protest material. However, Pierson's tastes expanded...
