iTunes Review

Though his former group the Afghan Whigs built Greg Dulli’s fan base, the frontman always considered The Twilight Singers his main band, which may be why 2011’s Dynamite Steps sounds like an upgrade of the Whigs’ Congregation and Gentlemen. From the dramatic opener “Last Night In Town”, dynamic layers of accompaniment reveal an eclectic cast comprising his project’s fifth studio album. The Verve’s guitarist Nick McCabe brings plenty of his six-string flourishes sounding like David Gilmour by way of U2’s The Edge — but his sonic swells play second fiddle to Dulli’s gripping narrative on the simmering “Be Invited” as Mark Lanegan’s scratchy inflections match Dulli’s weathered rasp. The following “Waves” is the most aggressive and driving tune here as McCabe drops the same kind of sonic hammers brought to the Verve’s “This Is Music”. The poetic and beautiful “Get Lucky” as well as a gorgeous duet with Ani DiFranco on “Blackbird and the Fox” proves Dulli to be in fine form.

Greg is back and it's a good thing. I've been following him through all incarnations for over 20 years. He's like an old friend that I miss greatly when he's not around but he scares me just a little when we are together regularly. He smokes too much, drinks too much and is a little full of himself but, (with respect), so are most of my friends. I'm glad he's back.

Welcome Back!!!

Amazing as usual! "Get Lucky" already on repeat.

Love and Respect!

Although launched as a side project during Greg Dulli's time with the Afghan Whigs, the Twilight Singers became Dulli's main band after the Whigs broke up in 2001. Dulli formed the group in 1997, while the Afghan Whigs were busy extracting themselves from a contract with their third label, Elektra. Enlisting a group of musicians -- including Harold Chichester of Howlin' Maggie, Shawn Smith of Brad, the Screaming Trees' Barrett Martin, and a group of New Orleans session players -- Dulli recorded a...
