n the minds of many, Gwen McCrae is indelibly associated with the Miami disco scene of the ‘70s. Songs like “Rockin’ Chair,” which updated an ageless blues entendre for the disco age, practically defined the Miami sound. It must have come as something of a surprise in 1981 when McCrae left the Miami-based TK imprint and traveled north to record Gwen McCrae with esteemed disco producer Kenton Nix, a regular at disco hotspots like the Paradise Garage. Nix also did mixing and production work for West End Records, a label with machine-tooled minimalism that anticipated the rise of house and electro. Nix’s New York aesthetic dominates Gwen McCrae, particularly the breakout single “Funky Sensation,” a bracing post-disco hit that was inescapable on New York dance floors in the early ‘80s. This album remains one of McCrae’s best and is at least as compelling as any of her more characteristic Miami recordings.
