iTunes Review

There's no more beautiful country-rock tune than Gene Clark's "Gypsy Rider," a song that evokes all the world's loneliness and romance in four and a half minutes. Originally released in 1987, So Rebellious a Lover proclaimed the return of one of modern music's most underrated artists. Clark had been a formidable member of The Byrds, writing several of their best tunes, before walking away due to a fear of flying. He continued to sporadically release solo material that has been rediscovered in the ensuing decades. However, this would be his last stand, and a glorious one it is. With The Textones' Carla Olson providing perfect harmony, tunes such as "Fair and Tender Ladies," "Why Did You Leave Me Today," and Gram Parsons' "I'm Your Toy (Hot Burrito #1)" are given gorgeous performances. This edition includes six bonus cuts, including a stunning cover of Phil Ochs' "Changes" and the heartwrenching "Broken Hearts and Broken Dreams" from Olson. Sadly, Clark passed away in 1991.

True gem

I have been a Gene Clark fan for a long time and with the beauty of Carla Olson's voice, this has become one of my favorite records. The songs are inspiring and some will bring a tear to your eye (Every Angel In Heaven and Deportee). The bonus tracks on the CD are a wonderful addition and the depth that they bring to Changes will almost make you forget the Ian & Sylvia version.

So Rebellious A Lover

A must have for any country-rock fan. Some of the best singing and songs of eithers work. If you are a fan of the Byrds, in any of their forms, this will nor dissapoin. the blending of their voices is amazing.

Along with Kathy Valentine (a future member of the Go-Go's), Carla Olson formed the Textones in the early '80s for a few singles on IRS. The band's major-label debut, Midnight Mission (A&M), included help from Don Henley, Ry Cooder, Barry Goldberg, and Gene Clark. Cedar Creek, the band's second album, appeared in 1987 on Enigma Records. Olson then worked on many projects, including ones by John Fogerty, Henley,...
