EDITORS’ NOTES

Singer/songwriter H.E.R.’s true identity remains unconfirmed and it’s not just her shadowy anonymity that echoes the The Weeknd’s early records. H.E.R. also deals in languid R&B geared to the weariness and paranoia of the early hours. Among sleepy, dimmed beats, her gorgeous vocal carves out sharp melodic patterns and romantic melodramas that make “Losing,” “U,” and “Facts” enthralling moments of 21st-century soul.

About H.E.R.

Presented anonymously, contemporary R&B artist H.E.R. debuted on major label RCA in 2016. H.E.R., Vol. 1, released for streaming and as a download that September, was a seven-track EP of downcast post-breakup material, mostly ballads, that sounded vulnerable and assured at once. Promotion was limited, but labelmates Alicia Keys and Bryson Tiller helped spread the word through social media. Among the selections was a cover of Drake's "Jungle."
