Repping for Lower Manhattan, Unsane has been putting out devastatingly hardcore, apocalyptic noise rock for more than 20 years now. After recording with pretty much every influential indie rock label of the era (including Sub Pop, Amphetamine Reptile, Man's Ruin, and Matador), Unsane drops its seventh studio album on Jello Biafra's long-running Alternative Tentacles. The group's lineup has changed repeatedly over the years, but the one constant has been guitarist/screamer Chris Spencer (original drummer Charlie Ondras died in 1992, and bassist Pete Shore left two years later). Not much could be as punishing as Unsane's early material, but this has its own kind of intensity, and it generally stays the course, with two exceptions: the sleepy slide guitar of "Stuck" and bluesy harmonica action on "No Chance." For the most part, this is the same old Unsane fans know and love, with the band sounding as good as it ever did on ferocious tracks like "Rat," "Metropolis," and the Flipper cover "Ha Ha Ha."
