iTunes Review

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross punctuated The Social Network with an equally dark score. Ross’ prior collaborations with Reznor include a third album for his band 12 Rounds as well as work for With Teeth, Reznor’s 2005 LP with Nine Inch Nails. But unlike those projects, these are instrumental compositions that mostly build on tones. “Hand Covers Bruise” dots Brian Eno-inspired ambient keyboard touches over a sinisterly buzzing drone that morphs into an incessant whir of ghostly howls. “In Motion” incorporates pulsing beats and subtly distorted bass that will sound familiar to fans of Reznor’s NIN recordings — though it’s the following track that’s titled “A Familiar Taste.” Here stuttered beats stagger and ripple over a mantra of repeated guitar lines that disintegrate into lilting piano notes. The haunting sounds that comprise “3:14 Every Night” play together like factory noise combined with a close-microphoned insect hive as heady tones increase to approximate the building of an anxiety attack.

Brilliant Score to a Great Movie

I've been a long-time fan of both Nine Inch Nails and David Fincher and I loved it when they collaborated for the NIN "Only" music video. So I was more than pleased when I heard Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross were composing the score of the Social Network. The music is very haunting and helps show the disconnect between Zuckerberg and the real world. The score to the movie can be considered Vol.V of the Ghosts project that Reznor and Ross did together as Nine Inch Nails (some songs were even taken and remixed for the Social Network). The opening song (not of the movie, that's Ball and Biscuit by The White Stripes) by Reznor/Ross really sets the mood for the rest of the movie and gives a strong chill as we see Zuckerberg walk the campus alone. Every song is just as powerful in my point of view and it's a definite must have soundtrack.

This soundtrack deserves an Oscar for best-supporting actor, because it made EVERY great scene even better.

Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have really pulled off something amazing here. Their haunting, yet catchy scores really capture the dark tone of the movie. It will be a tragedy if Ross & Reznor aren't nominated for Best Original Score when the oscars come around. The most memorable tracks are HAND COVERS BRUISE, IN MOTION, and INTRIGUING POSSIBILITIES. And in an unforgettable scene in the movie, the crew-race with the Winklevoss twins, Reznor & Ross digitally remix "In the Hall of the Mountain King" making it a standout soundtrack.

Nine Inch Nails were the most popular industrial group ever and were largely responsible for bringing the music to a mass audience. It isn't really accurate to call NIN a group; the only official member is singer/producer/multi-instrumentalist Trent Reznor, who always remained solely responsible for NIN's musical direction (he was, however, supported in concert by a regular backing band). Unlike the vast majority of industrial artists, Reznor wrote melodic, traditionally structured songs where lyrics...
